New Year’s Tradition 2019 Edition
There’s a tradition in the puzzle community each year around New Year’s Day. Puzzles will be posted with a central theme: the new year. Here’s a brief roundup of the 2019-themed puzzles around the community this year.
Happy 2019 Sudoku (Quadrata by David Nacin)
David Nacin, a friend of mine and professor at William Paterson University, found a novel relationship between the numbers 0, 1, 2, and 9 and the letters A, H, P, and Y. Putting that mechanic to use, he’s presented a fun twist on Difference Sudoku over at his Latin Square-centric blog.
Happy 2019 Area 51 (The Griddle by David Millar (me))
At the risk of overburdening my followers, I’ve followed up the yearly #PuzzleAdventCalendar event with a 2019-themed Area 51 puzzle, complete with a big 9 slitherlink clue covering a 3×3 region, and some 20 and 19 corral clues. Check it out.
Block Maze (by @buyaketa)
This neat 2019 block maze was posted to Twitter early this morning by @buyaketa. I’m not going to lie; I’m not super familiar with this puzzle type and don’t have a great translator on-hand. That said, I think the example shows that the objective is to make a path from S to G, not go through any X cells, and only go through 2 cells in each shaded region. A PZV link is provided as well, if you prefer to solve interactively.
Sudoku 17: Killer Sudoku (Let’s Sudoku by Hemant Kr. Malani)
Sometimes nothing beats the classic sudoku variants, like this killer sudoku from Let’s Sudoku. It offers a straightfoward challenge with alternating 20 and 19 clues to celebrate the new year.
Those are the four I’ve found so far. Feel free to email me or post in the comments if there are more 2019-themed puzzles I’ve yet to find!
